Not just another suburb, Southport is one of four towns within Marion County that chose to be excluded from Uni-Gov (the 1969 act that consolidated Indianapolis and most of Marion County). Just south of Indianapolis, they simply wanted to retain their own identity and sovereignty. And it’s worked well!
As with many of our central Indiana communities, Southport is not too far from its bicentennial. Founded/established in 1832, Southport has a claim that it was about the first Marion County community to be incorporated. That was in 1853.
The town’s name, and much of its 180-year heritage, comes from a simple deduction.
South: it lies south of Indiana’s capital and largest city.
Port: For many, many decades, this was the location to and from which freight and products were sent.
In Southport the products were loaded or unloaded, then send to their destination north in Indianapolis or elsewhere in the country. So yes – this is a real, albeit landlocked, "port."
Today, Southport remains a small town with small town values. At only 0.6 square miles, it’s tiny. With fewer than 2,000 residents, it’s small. Yet its residents are proud of their small town and look to the future with enthusiasm. It's not just any ol' (South)port in a storm.
