Noblesville, home to the Millers. The Noblesville High School Millers. And that's the nickname, not a family living nearby. We can assume that it's relative to the White River running through Noblesville Indiana and the Noblesville Mill that worked the area for decades.
Nearly two hundred years ago, the land that now makes up Hamilton County was purchased from the native Indians. William Conner (more on him later) was the only settler 'round these here parts.
Conner and his Delaware Indian wife had opened the first trading post in central Indiana 'round 18-aught-two. About five years after the land was acquired, Conner helped design the area that's now downtown Noblesville. That led to Noblesville being named Hamilton County seat in 1824. Interestingly, The Conner Prairie Pioneer Settlement just south of Noblesville is a historic reenactment of those days in 1823. It's called a "living history museum" because of the ongoing re-neactments of the era, and is one of the most popular attractions in central Indiana.
Legend says that Noblesville was named either for James Noble, a state senator, or for Lavinia Noble, the fiancee' of Josiah Polk, one of the town's "designers."
Some dates to note:
1851: The Peru and Indianapolis Railroad was built through town, always a good thing for commerce and population growth in those days.
1888: They discovered a natural gas well not far from downtown. Again, good for the economy.
1962: The Schwab family, consisting of 5 boys and a girl, move to Noblesville. Just about doubling the population and certainly good for the economy.
Noblesville is well known for its well-maintained Victorian homes, built in the late 19th-century, and it's historic downtown buildings, including the Courthouse Square, site of the Hamilton County Courthouse and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Residence and Jail (both built in the late 1870's). Today, both are architects' and builders' dreams, examples of the Second Empire (huh?).
Today's Noblesville residents enjoy housing prices, exceptional schools and a high quality of life. Just north of Indianapolis, Noblesville offers easy access to the many amenities of Indianapolis without the hassle.
The town's pride in its downtown and Main Street resulted in The Indiana Chamber of Commerce awarding Noblesville its 2008 Community of the Year award. The award recognized a city's contributions to local businesses and its overall image. No question Noblesville did just that. Noblesville's ability to maintain its downtown and high quality of life, as well as its ability to grow and plan for the future helped it earn the award.
Their goal is to balance historic preservation with economic development while promoting the area's charming architecture and local pride and businesses.
Noblesville's downtown hosts many annual events, including holiday events, weekly farmers' markets, street dances, hula hoop contests, Speedo fashion events and more.
The Hamilton County seat, Noblesville is home to the Hamilton County courthouse, built in 1879, and Potter's Bridge, an historic covered bridge.
