Here’s a little secret: the town of Cumberland Indiana seems to be one of those hidden gems, the proverbial diamond in the rough.
Right down the middle of Cumberland is the Historic National Road (U.S. 40), which is pretty much the reason Cumberland exists. When the National Road was being constructed through Indiana in the early 1830’s, they platted a “last stop” before Indianapolis - straddling Marion and Hancock Counties about ten miles east of Indiana’s capitol. That last stop was named Cumberland, after the road’s beginning point in Maryland.
(Three little known facts to amaze your friends: The National Road was originally called the Cumberland Road after its Cumberland, Maryland starting point; it was the first improved highway in America; and it was the first road in America paved with Macadam, known in Indiana as asphalt.)
Ever compare the past with the present? Cumberland’s first Post Office was opened in 1842. By the mid-1880’s, 400 people called Cumberland home, enjoying the big town benefits of one hotel, a railway station, two sawmills, two blacksmiths, a schoolhouse and three churches. Seriously – only two blacksmiths?
Cumberland’s rich transportation history doesn’t stop at the Historic National Road. It was also a stop along the interurban to Indianapolis and the Pennsylvania railroad once carried travelers to Cumberland and also transported crops and livestock
‘Nuff said about the past.
Today, Cumberland is an easy 20-minute drive to downtown Indianapolis, with easy access to interstates and two airports.
Its historic downtown is protected by its listing on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to that, Cumberland and Indianapolis established an historic conservation district to further protect the community’s historical core. In the end, you’ll find that they’ve done a nice job of protecting Cumberland’s original small town charm.
The town is loaded with parks and National Road reminders. Their main parks are the National Road Park, Honors Park and Lions Park. Plus, the town is expanding its walk and bike trail system with the Pennsy Trail currently under construction. As part of the Indianapolis Parks Greenways program, Cumberland’s trail will soon connect to the near-eastside of Indianapolis and the other Greenways Trails. The Pennsy is also a connector to the cross-state National Road Heritage Trail.
Small-town charm, surprisingly near big-town amenities.
