Around 1823, Madison County was officially formed by the State, and a modest cabin in Pendleton near the falls was the governmental center.In 1825, Thomas Pendleton moved to the area and soon laid out a town around the cabin and gave it his name. (Advice: don't give away your name - you'll have no way to be identified.) Pendleton was the county seat until it relocated to Andersontown (now Anderson) in 1826.
Something to note: In 1843, noted abolitionist Frederick Douglass spoke in Pendleton. It’s suggested that his life was in danger from would-be assassins. Through the compassion and bravery of members of the town, he escaped safely.
Through the 20th century Pendleton continued to grow, all the while remaining committed to responsible planning, including setting aside 150 acres in town as Falls Park.
