In 1820, a site along central Indiana's White River was selected as the new location for the state's capital. The name Indianapolis was created by joining Indiana with polis, the Greek word for city. The new capital city was designed by Alexander Ralston who had helped plan the nation's capital in Washington, DC. His plan for called for a city of one square mile, at the center of which was a large circular commons, now known as Monument Circle.
By the turn of the century, Indianapolis rivalled Detroit as a major automobile manufacturer, rivaling the likes of Detroit. The city grew rapidly throughout the first half of the 20th century, followed by rapid suburbanization in the second half.
Today, the city invests heavily in projects such as an expansion to the Convention Center, a new terminal for the Indianapolis International Airport, Lucas Oil Stadium, the Indianapolis Colts' new home and downtown's Circle Centre Mall. The city's population is 795,458, making it the 13th largest city in the U.S. and the second largest state capital (after Phoenix, Arizona).
Much of the city's recent growth has been seen in the suburbs, including nearby Hamilton, Hendricks, and Johnson counties. The population of the combined statistical area is over two million residents, making it the 23rd largest in the U.S.
