In the 21st century, Indianapolis' tremendous growth as a business center and its reputation as an amateur and professional sports capital have caught the attention of cities all across the nation and the world.
Yet the city and its residents remain friendly, caring and unspoiled. The Hoosier capital consistently ranks as one of the cleanest and safest cities in the nation, and its cost of living and unemployment rates remain below the national average. Plus, it often ranks among the most affordable American cities in which to own a home. While the housing market did not see the "benefits" of the housing bubble, Indianapolis has not see the same downside of falling prices.
Nearly two hundred years ago, the center of the state of Indiana was chosen as the site of the new capital, Indianapolis Indiana. Today, it's considered the Crossroads of America with more interstates, highways and railways leading to the city. Native Indiana Hoosiers are known for their love of sports and especially the Indiana teams that play those sports. Indianapolis is the hub for several major sport lineups such as the Indianapolis 500, NASCAR's Brickyard 400, the NFL's Indianapolis Colts and the NBA's Indiana Pacers.

“Cosmopolitan with Midwestern appeal, Indianapolis is fast becoming one of America’s favorite cities.” -Northwest Airlines WorldTraveler, May 2008
“From the exciting world of sports to the detail and subtlety of the fine arts, Indianapolis has emerged as a cultural leader of the Midwest.” -Group Travel Leader, September 2008
“While the city lays claim to 10 world-class sports venues, that is just a fraction of its cultural institution tally: 14 museums, 21 galleries and 25 performing arts centers and theaters” -The Washington Post, May 28, 2008
In 1820, a site along central Indiana's White River was selected as the new location for the state's capital. The name Indianapolis was created by joining Indiana with polis, the Greek word for city. The new capital city was designed by Alexander Ralston who had helped plan the nation's capital in Washington, DC. His plan for called for a city of one square mile, at the center of which was a large circular commons, now known as Monument Circle.
By the turn of the century, Indianapolis rivalled Detroit as a major automobile manufacturer, rivaling the likes of Detroit. The city grew rapidly throughout the first half of the 20th century, followed by rapid suburbanization in the second half.
Today, the city invests heavily in projects such as an expansion to the Convention Center, a new terminal for the Indianapolis International Airport, Lucas Oil Stadium, the Indianapolis Colts' new home and downtown's Circle Centre Mall. The city's population is 795,458, making it the 13th largest city in the U.S. and the second largest state capital (after Phoenix, Arizona).
Much of the city's recent growth has been seen in the suburbs, including nearby Hamilton, Hendricks, and Johnson counties. The population of the combined statistical area is over two million residents, making it the 23rd largest in the U.S.
