In 1813, three rangers, Williamson Dunn, Henry Ristine and Major Ambrose Whitlock decided that the site was ideal for settlement. They returned a decade later and began the process of laying out the town. ("This is perfect! Let's come back in ten years!") In 1832, Wabash College, an all-male liberal arts college was founded in Crawfordsville. Today Crawfordsville is still rich with history and the friendly midwestern life.
Local LegendIn the late 19th century, a monster, described as a cloud with red glowing eyes, was first spotted, becoming known as The Crawfordsville Monster. Its story was featured on The History Channel's television series Monster Quest.
Legendary LocalsWabash College won the Division III NCAA basketball title in 1982. More importantly, the college has an annual football rivalry against Depauw, competing for the Monon Bell. The Monon Bell is one of the oldest rivalries in all college sports. No deaths involved, but it's serious.
IndustryThe beginning of the 20th century marked important steps for Crawfordsville. In 1902 Culver Union Hospital and the Carnegie Library were built. Culver moved from its original location near downtown in 1984 and was renamed St. Clare Medical Center in 2000. The Carnegie Library reverted to a local museum and the public library moved across the street.
In 1911, Crawfordsville High School (motto: Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve) was founded and promptly won the state's first high school basketball title. And yes - there were other teams in the tournament. Crawfordsville's major employer for much of the century, commercial printer RR Donnelley, began operations in Crawfordsville in 1922.
Crawfordsville is the home of the world's first thin-slab casting minimill, a steel manufacturing plant that recycles scrap steel. In 1987 Nucor Steel broke ground on its first sheet steel mill and galvanizing line at its Crawfordsville facility.
Recent history has held few nationally noteworthy events for the city, but much internal change. Nucor Steel, Alcoa CSI, Raybestos Products Company, Pace Dairy Foods, and Random House have all created factories in or near Crawfordsville which provided employment to much of the population.
