In 1834, William Harris platted a town in central Indiana that he named Harrisburgh. In 1836 when the post office opened, the town was renamed for one of the first settlers, James B. Brown. Incorporated in 1848, it was a quiet midwestern town until the 1990s, when suburban growth reached. A century ago, as many as 100 horse-drawn wagons congregated near the center of town, a small business district that is still maintained - at the intersection of US 136 and State Road 267. This is where today's Town Hall, state-of-the-art Fire and Police headquarters, and the Brownsburg Chamber of Commerce are located.
